There is no need to assume that every cling film is dangerous. Properly manufactured food-contact films that comply with applicable regulations are designed to be used safely under specified conditions.
Nevertheless, reducing unnecessary contact between food and plastic can be a reasonable choice, particularly when convenient alternatives are available. Consumers can look for products clearly labelled as suitable for food contact and, where relevant, PVC-free and free from specific plasticizers of concern.
Safer Alternatives for Food Storage
Glass Containers
Glass containers are a practical option for storing both hot and cold foods.
Advantages include:
- Durable and reusable
- Suitable for acidic and fatty foods
- Easy to clean
- Suitable for refrigeration and, when specifically designed for it, heating
- No plastic film is required for direct food contact
Stainless-Steel Containers
Stainless-steel containers are another durable, reusable option, particularly for transporting and storing food.
Baking or Parchment Paper
Parchment paper can be useful for covering or wrapping certain foods, particularly for short-term storage. It should be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Cellulose or Compostable Films
Some films are made from cellulose or other alternative materials. However, “compostable” or “biodegradable” does not automatically mean that a product is safer for food contact. Always check that the product is specifically approved or labelled for food use.
