When my father-in-law, Robert, moved into our house, I was honestly happy.

He was sixty-eight, had recently lost his wife and lived completely alone in a huge house. My husband, Daniel, suggested that he stay with us for a while. Our six-year-old daughter Emily loved her grandfather and, whenever she was with her, Robert seemed to regain the desire to live.

For the first few weeks, everything seemed completely normal.

Robert would take Emily to school, prepare breakfast, and read stories to her at night. When I was back late from work, my daughter had already had dinner and her backpack was ready for the next day.

I was grateful. But then I started to notice strange things.

I sent Emily to school with a morning  dress blue. When he returned home that afternoon, he was wearing a pink tracksuit.

“What happened to your dress?” I asked.

Emily shrugged.

“Grandpa said I had to change from  clothes.

Robert immediately explained that Emily had spilled juice on the dress during lunch. I didn’t ask any more questions. That kind of thing happens constantly to children. But two days later it happened again. And then it happened once again.

Sometimes Robert would change his clothes twice in a single week. Every time I asked him why, he always had an answer ready.

She once said that Emily had been stained with mud while playing outside. On another occasion he claimed that he had sweated. Then he said that the  T-shirt It was uncomfortable. The strangest thing was that he was washing his clothes immediately.

One night I walked into the laundry room and found Robert handwashing only Emily’s clothes.

“Why don’t you put it in the washing machine?” I asked.

Washing machines

For a moment, he was paralyzed. Then he sank the clothes more in the water.

Some stains do not come out in the washing machine.

There was something in his voice that made me uncomfortable. That night I told Daniel everything.

“He’s just being too protective,” said my husband. Don’t forget that she spent her whole life working with children.

Robert had been a school bus driver for many years. Everyone in the city knew him and respected him. But that didn’t get me reassured.

Then the problem of the  time of  bath.

Every night, when I was preparing to bathe Emily, Robert would show up near the bathroom and say,

“You’re tired. Let me take a bath.

I refused the first time.

The next night he offered again. When I told him I didn’t need help, a strange tension appeared on his face.

“It would be better if I did,” he whispered. Please.

That “please” didn’t stop going around in my head all night.

The next day, Emily’s teacher called me and told me that my daughter had been unusually quiet during classes. He had asked to go to the school infirmary, but he refused to explain the reason.

I felt my heart shrink.

When I got home, I opened the closet of  bedroom Emily’s. In the lower drawer I discovered a bag containing the clothes that Robert had taken from him for the last few days. Some garments had dark spots that were barely distinguished.

One terrible thought after another went through my mind. I tried to talk to my daughter calmly.

“Honey, has Grandpa ever forced you to do something you didn’t want?”

Emily looked at me for a long moment before looking down.

“Grandpa said I shouldn’t tell you yet.

My whole body was frozen.

What should you not tell me?

She remained silent. At that moment, Robert entered the room. When he saw the bag in my hands, his face paled.

“You weren’t supposed to find that,” he said.

I took Emily in my arms and immediately left the room.

That night I could barely sleep. Daniel insisted that we should talk to his father before drawing conclusions, but I no longer trusted any explanation Robert could give me.

The next morning I installed a small hidden camera in the living room. It was facing the hallway and the closed door of the bathroom. I needed to know what was going on while I was away.

At work I watched the camera transmission from my phone all day long. At 3:40 p.m., Robert took Emily home after school. She didn’t run like she used to. He walked slowly, holding a hand resting on one side.

Robert knelt in front of her and asked anxiously:

“Has it started again?”

“Grandpa said I shouldn’t tell you yet.

Emily nodded.

Do we tell Mom?

“No,” Robert replied. I have to make sure first.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I ran out of work and came home twenty minutes later.

As soon as I opened the front door, I heard the water running in the bathroom. I ran down the hall and opened the door.

Robert was fully dressed by the bathtub. Emily was also wearing all her  clothes; only his feet were submerged in the warm water. Grandfather wore protective gloves and carefully examined the red spots that had appeared on the girl’s legs.

Above the sink was a special pharmacy soap, clean towels and a notebook.

In the notebook, Robert had recorded when each rash appeared, what clothes Emily had worn, and what she had eaten that day.

Clothing

“What does all this mean?” I asked.

Robert sat down and covered his face with his hands.

“I think Emily has the same illness her grandmother had.

It turned out that Robert’s wife had suffered for years from a strange allergic skin condition. Certain fabrics, laundry detergents and even common soaps caused painful inflammations.

Over the past few days, Robert had observed the same symptoms in Emily.

That’s why the  clothes.

That’s why he washed the clothes separately and by hand.

And every time she offered to bathe her, her intention was to use a special product and check if new spots had appeared on her skin.

“Why didn’t you tell me anything?” I shouted, feeling angry and relieved at the same time.

Robert’s eyes filled with tears.

I made a mistake. First I wanted to be completely sure. Daniel’s mother suffered greatly from this disease. I was afraid you’d think I was exaggerating. I asked Emily not to say anything until she got a doctor’s appointment. Now I understand how terrifying my behavior must have seemed.

That same night we took Emily to the doctor.

Robert was right.

Our daughter was diagnosed with a mild form of the same disease. The doctor said that if we had discovered it later, it could have become much more serious.

When we left the clinic, Emily took her grandfather’s hand.

“I knew you were helping me,” he said.

I looked at Robert, too ashamed to talk. He didn’t blame me. He just said quietly:

“You are his mother. You had every right in the world to worry. But I should have told you everything from the beginning.

From that day on, there were no secrets in our house again.

But I never deleted the camera footage.

I kept it, not because it showed something terrible, but because in the final scene a scared grandfather appeared kneeling in front of his granddaughter, whispering to him:

“I couldn’t help your grandmother in time, but I won’t make the same mistake with you.
