Place the pieces of charcoal inside. There’s no need to crush or powder them. Ideally, use medium-sized, firm, and dry pieces, as these are easier to handle and make less of a mess.
Find a stable spot inside the refrigerator. It’s best to place it somewhere it won’t tip over when you move food, like on the side of a shelf or in a free corner.
Leave the container uncovered so the charcoal is exposed to the cold air inside. This exposure is important so it can help absorb the odors that accumulate over time.
Keep it in the refrigerator for several days. You don’t need to touch or move it constantly. Just let it work and continue using the refrigerator as usual.
Check it every one or two weeks. If you notice the odors returning, you can replace the charcoal pieces with fresh ones to maintain the effect.
What is this method used for?
Charcoal is used in the home because it helps absorb odors from the air. Inside the refrigerator, it can be helpful when the aromas of onions, cheeses, leftovers, fruits, vegetables, or foods stored in containers are mixed together.
