Chema looked confused.<\/p>\n

Valeria spoke from behind him.<\/p>\n

Every head turned toward her.<\/p>\n

Valeria walked forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was getting married.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Chema stared at her.<\/p>\n

Then memory returned.<\/p>\n

The little church.<\/p>\n

The mariachi music.<\/p>\n

The white flowers.<\/p>\n

The way he had cried when he danced with her.<\/p>\n

Valeria pulled out her phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy father was in Puebla for my wedding from September 12 through September 17.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sof\u00eda placed hotel receipts, toll records, photographs, and bus tickets on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeaning he could not have signed an inventory release in Ecatepec at 6:42 a.m. on September 14.\u201d<\/p>\n

The prosecutor stood.<\/p>\n

\u201cElectronic credentials can be used remotely.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sof\u00eda turned toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd who controlled those credentials after my father retired?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody answered.<\/p>\n

She looked directly at Robles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe school administration.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Principal Robles spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

His attorney grabbed his arm.<\/p>\n

But Robles pulled away.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat old man had access to everything for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don Chema flinched at the words old man.<\/p>\n

Sof\u00eda didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Robles frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor confirming that your accusation depends on historical access rather than evidence that my father actually authorized these transactions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robles\u2019s attorney whispered harshly, \u201cStop talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Vargas leaned forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cMs. Hern\u00e1ndez, is this the only discrepancy you have discovered?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sof\u00eda looked toward Luc\u00eda.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Your Honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luc\u00eda finally moved.<\/p>\n

She carried a laptop.<\/p>\n

She placed it beside Sof\u00eda.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is my sister Luc\u00eda Hern\u00e1ndez,\u201d Sof\u00eda said. \u201cShe works in forensic accounting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robles went pale.<\/p>\n

Don Chema looked at Luc\u00eda.<\/p>\n

Luc\u00eda finally laughed.<\/p>\n
