Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block healthdotcom-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\">Yes, You Need to Wash Your Produce<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_9-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Even without an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/cyclospora-outbreak-update-taylor-farms-lettuce-12023527\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">ongoing\u00a0<em>Cyclospora<\/em>\u00a0outbreak<\/a>, you\u2019d still benefit most from rinsing off your veggies\u2014even produce with rinds you plan on removing, like lemons or oranges. The act of peeling off that outer layer could transfer pathogens from the produce\u2019s skin to the edible flesh.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_11-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Some foods may require additional scrubbing. Root vegetables, like carrots, are grown entirely underground and may harbor extra dirt and debris.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_13-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">You also want to pay\u00a0<a class=\"recommendation-inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/lettuce-could-be-source-of-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-12018959\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">special attention to lettuce<\/a>. \u201cLeafy greens require a bit more attention because their folds and crevices can trap dirt, debris, and microorganisms,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/stopfoodborneillness.org\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">Vanessa Coffman, PhD<\/a>, director of the Alliance to Stop Foodborne Illness, told HEALTH.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_15-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">The only exception is when you\u2019re dealing with pre-washed produce. In those situations, additional washing is unnecessary and may even introduce new germs into your food.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_17-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cYou risk it coming into contact with a dirty or contaminated sink or surface,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodsci.rutgers.edu\/faculty\/schaffner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">Don Schaffner, PhD<\/a>, department chair, distinguished professor, and extension specialist in food science at Rutgers University, told HEALTH.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_19-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block healthdotcom-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\">Washing Produce Reduces Risk\u2014But Doesn\u2019t Eliminate It<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Washing your produce helps remove dirt, pesticides, and germs, but it doesn\u2019t remove all contaminants or provide complete protection against illness.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">There isn\u2019t a ton of research on how much bacteria washing can remove, Schaffner said, but it only takes a few particles on a piece of produce to make you sick. This is especially true for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.com\/cyclosporiasis-outbeak-fresh-produce-12017111\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\">parasites like\u00a0<em>Cyclospora<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that cling tightly to produce, Coffman added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_24-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Some pathogens can also make their way inside fruit or vegetables. For example, studies have shown that\u00a0<em>E. coli<\/em>\u00a0can enter tomatoes through the stem scar, where it\u2019s protected from surface washing, Coffman said.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" tabindex=\"0\" data-id=\"#citation-4\">3<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_26-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">That\u2019s where other food safety practices come into play, like cooking, refrigerating, and preventing cross-contamination.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_28-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This all sounds overwhelming and may leave you wondering if anything is actually safe to eat\u2014but Schaffner said most fresh produce in the U.S. is pathogen-free, and there\u2019s no reason to avoid anything not under recall.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_30-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cThere may be certain types of produce that are more commonly associated with outbreaks in any given year,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I would not recommend avoiding certain types of produce because of a higher risk, since the risk of everything is very low.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"mntl-sc-block_32-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block healthdotcom-sc-block-heading mntl-sc-block-heading\"><span class=\"mntl-sc-block-heading__text text-title-300\">How to Properly Wash Fruits and Vegetables<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_33-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">This isn\u2019t a complicated process: Use clean hands to thoroughly rinse produce under cool, running water\u2014including produce you plan to peel. You should also use a dedicated produce brush to scrub dirt off firmer fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_35-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If you\u2019re preparing lettuce\u2014and you\u2019re not using pre-washed greens\u2014remove and discard the outermost leaves, then separate, wash, and dry the remaining leaves.<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_37-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">If you\u2019re worried about water temperature or time spent washing, don\u2019t be\u2014they don\u2019t make a major difference. \u201cWe\u2019ve studied 60, 80, and 100 degrees Fahrenheit and found no statistically significant difference,\u201d Schaffner said. \u201cDuration also doesn\u2019t make much practical difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_39-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">And skip any special soaps, bleaches, commercial produce washes, or even baking soda and vinegar concoctions. \u201cThese products have not been shown to provide a meaningful food safety benefit over water alone, and in some cases, may leave behind residues or alter the taste and quality of the produce,\u201d Coffman said.<span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" tabindex=\"0\" data-id=\"#citation-2\">4<\/span><span class=\"mntl-inline-citation mntl-dynamic-tooltip--trigger\" tabindex=\"0\" data-id=\"#citation-1\" data-tooltip-position-x=\"center\" data-tooltip-position-y=\"bottom\">5<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do you really have to wash all your fruits and vegetables before eating them?
