Symptoms may become worse when the elbow remains bent for long periods.
This can happen during sleep, when talking on the phone, or when resting your elbow on a hard surface.
Over time, significant ulnar nerve compression can also cause hand weakness.
If you frequently experience numbness in the ring and little fingers, especially with weakness or difficulty gripping objects, it is worth getting evaluated.
5. Diabetes Can Affect the Nerves
Persistent numbness in the hands can sometimes be related to diabetes.
High blood glucose over time can damage nerves and the small blood vessels that supply them.
This is known as diabetic neuropathy.
Although diabetic peripheral neuropathy often begins in the feet and legs, the hands can also become affected.
Symptoms may include:
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Burning
- Pain
- Increased sensitivity
- Reduced ability to feel temperature or touch
People with diabetes may not always notice nerve damage early.
