“Please!” she called to an employee. “Has anyone found a diamond ring? I was here a little while ago!”
Ellie immediately tugged my sleeve.
“Grandma! That’s her!”
Before I could stop her, she hurried toward the woman.
“Excuse me, ma’am. Did you lose this?”
She opened her little hand.
The woman froze.
For several seconds, she simply stared at the ring.
Then she dropped to her knees in front of Ellie.
“Oh, thank goodness,” she whispered.
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
“Thank you. Thank you so much.”
She carefully took the ring, holding it against her chest as though it were the most precious thing in the world.
I smiled.
“Was it your wedding ring?”
The woman looked up.
“No,” she answered quietly. “It’s something much more important.”
Then her gaze returned to Ellie.
Something about my granddaughter seemed to astonish her.
She studied Ellie’s eyes, her hair, and the shape of her face.
