I looked at her.
“Why Saturday?”
“Because I wasn’t sure I could actually come.”
She held the photographs against her chest.
“When Robert first contacted me, I thought he was lying.”
“Everything he told me contradicted what I’d believed my entire life.”
At first, Amelia didn’t even believe Robert was really connected to us.
Then she believed his identity but not his story.
Robert had told her that I loved Claire.
That I still talked about my sister.
That I had kept boxes full of photographs, cards, letters, and personal things.
Amelia couldn’t understand.
“If you cared so much, why did you disappear?”
That was the question she couldn’t get past.
“So I started showing her,” Robert said.
“Photographs first.”
“Then cards.”
“Letters.”
“I thought if she could see actual proof before meeting you, she might feel safe enough to walk through our door.”
Amelia nodded.
