For twenty years, my mother made sure the homeless boy living behind our house never went hungry. After her funeral, he took both my hands in his and told me, “Before she d:ie:d, she BEGGED ME TO KEEP HER SECRET FROM YOU.”

Eighteenth Birthday.

High School Graduation.

Your Wedding Day.

When Life Feels Too Difficult.

Becoming a Parent.

When You Think Nobody Understands.

I stared at the tapes.

“What are these?”

Gabriel’s voice softened.

“Messages your father recorded for you.”

My knees felt weak.

Dad had known his health was declining.

Before he died, he’d recorded messages for the milestones and difficult moments he feared he might miss.

He’d entrusted the recordings to Gabriel with instructions to give them to me when I turned eighteen.

“But I turned eighteen eleven years ago,” I whispered.

Gabriel lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“Then why didn’t you bring them?”

He hesitated.

“Your mother asked me not to.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

Gabriel explained that Mom had listened to one recording shortly after Dad’s passing.

Hearing his voice again had overwhelmed her.

She feared the tapes might make my grief worse and keep me emotionally trapped in the past.
