A younger person might never have imagined taking on such a role.
Yet circumstances don’t always ask whether we’re ready.
They simply arrive.
Chris responded by adapting.
He changed his routine.
He made space.
He accepted new responsibilities.
And he remained present.
There Was No Guarantee That Things Would Improve
One of the hardest parts of supporting someone with a serious illness is uncertainty.
You can hope.
You can search for treatment.
You can raise money.
You can seek better care.
But you cannot control the outcome.
Chris couldn’t guarantee Norma would recover.
He couldn’t promise the illness would disappear.
He couldn’t make her young again.
He couldn’t restore her independence.
What he could do was make sure she wasn’t facing the uncertainty alone.
That is a very different kind of love.
It’s not the love that says:
“I will fix everything.”
It’s the love that says:
“I will be here with you while we face what we cannot fix.”
