“How long has she been like this?”
“I don’t know,” I said. “I came home and found her unconscious.”
The paramedic looked at my mother.
“You were here?”
My mother’s voice turned sweet.
“I was helping. She refused to rest. Young mothers are very emotional.”
The paramedic did not smile.
He picked up the discharge packet and turned the page.
Then his expression hardened.
“Who is Eleanor Ward?”
My mother froze.
I stared at her.
Eleanor Ward.
My mother’s full name.
The paramedic held up the second discharge sheet.
At the bottom was a signature.
Eleanor Ward.
Designated temporary caregiver.
Acknowledgment of postpartum warning signs.
Acknowledgment that patient should not lift, cook, clean, stand for extended periods, or remain without direct monitoring during weakness or fever.
My throat went dry.
“You signed this?”
My mother looked away.
“It was just paperwork.”
The paramedic’s voice became sharp.
