I Came to Work to Surprise My Husband — But His Colleague Asked Me with Tears in His Eyes: “He Didn’t HisoTell You Anything, Did He?”

He nodded.

I picked up the folder.

— Tomorrow I’m going to figure out what this move would cost me: my clients, Olive’s school, and the support system we have here. Then I’ll decide whether Oregon even deserves to be considered.

For the first time, Ben didn’t try to control the outcome.

— Okay, Chelsea.

— Good. Because my life is part of this conversation too.

The next day at lunchtime, I called him.

— I want to see the entire offer: schedule, shifts, relocation plan — everything that affects me and Olive.

— Chelsea, I tried to simplify everything.

— That’s exactly the problem, Ben. You keep deciding what will be easier before you even ask us what we think.

Later, I went into his home office to find a charger and heard a voice coming from his laptop.

— We’re still prepared to offer you the schedule you agreed to.
