I looked at him.
“A joke about a dying man?”
Mom immediately tried to regain control of the room.
“Look, Maya, we used the family account for the trip. So what? I was his wife. I’m entitled to manage our household funds.”
I placed a stack of printed bank records on the coffee table.
“You spent nearly ten thousand dollars of my personal military pay transfers while Victor was left without basic care or food.”
Mason lifted his hands.
“We’ll pay you back once the estate settles!”
I looked at him.
“Pay me back with what?”
Mom scoffed and moved closer.
“With Victor’s life insurance and his pension payout, of course! As his widow, I’m the sole beneficiary of his estate. So stop acting so holier-than-thou!”
That was when Sarah stood.
She carried a leather legal portfolio in one hand.
“Mrs. Vance, I am Victor’s estate attorney,” Sarah said with absolute professional calm. “And I suggest you take a seat.”
