I discovered my sick stepfather shivering under a blanket, and on the table my mother had written, “It sucks, fix it before we get back.”

Mom opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Mason immediately stepped backward toward the front door.

“I didn’t touch his medicine! Mom was the one who handled his prescriptions!”

“Mason!” my mother shrieked, turning on him. “You told me to save money on the refills!”

“Because you said we needed cash for the cruise!” Mason yelled back.

Within seconds, they had turned on each other.

Not over Victor.

Over money.

Money they had never even known existed.

I watched them for a moment.

Then I spoke.

“You have until six o’clock tomorrow evening to remove your personal clothing from this property,” I told them, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “The house is held under the trust. The locks will be changed at six-0-one.”

The legal and criminal consequences unfolded over the following six months.

State prosecutors brought formal charges against Mom for felony elder neglect and reckless endangerment.
