I discovered my sick stepfather shivering under a blanket, and on the table my mother had written, “It sucks, fix it before we get back.”

Because in that instant, I understood that I wasn’t simply looking at selfish relatives who had abandoned a sick man.

This had become something much more serious.

And I had no idea that the diluted bottle of medication would eventually expose a secret powerful enough to dismantle my entire family.

**Part 2**

By the next morning, my medical and operational training had taken over.

I documented everything I could.

High-resolution photographs of Victor’s condition.

The unpaid utility notices.

The thermostat.

The almost-empty refrigerator.

The state of his bedroom.

Every transaction in the joint account.

Then I called Victor’s lead oncologist, Dr. Vance.

After I explained what had happened, there was a long silence on the line.

“Maya, keep that bottle untouched,” Dr. Vance instructed firmly. “Do not throw it away. If he has another severe crisis, bring him directly to the hospital transport unit. We will document everything officially on our end.”
