I discovered my sick stepfather shivering under a blanket, and on the table my mother had written, “It sucks, fix it before we get back.”

For nearly two hours, Sarah and Victor reviewed his estate plan in detail.

He completely restructured his will and trust.

Most of the three-million-dollar estate would eventually support homeless and terminally ill veterans.

A significant portion was placed under my direct administration, along with a personal bequest to me.

Evelyn, Mason, and Chloe were explicitly removed from any voluntary benefits.

Victor wasn’t smiling when he made the decision.

He told Sarah plainly:

“I have no intention of rewarding the people who waited for me to die so they could divide up a fortune they didn’t even know existed.”

That evening, I opened the family group chat.

I typed:

“Victor’s condition has deteriorated sharply. The doctor says he may not make it through the night. Please come back. This is your last chance to say goodbye.”

Mason read it immediately.

Chloe opened it two minutes later.

Mom took five minutes to respond.
