The way he increasingly seemed distracted whenever we were together.
Four months.
So many little things suddenly made sense.
Laura looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes.
“I really thought you were separated.”
I studied her expression.
She looked genuinely upset.
And slowly, I began to understand that Daniel hadn’t only lied to me.
He’d lied to her too.
I turned toward him.
“Did you tell Laura I knew about your relationship?”
He avoided my eyes.
Laura answered for him.
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes for a moment.
He had told her that his wife knew.
That we were separated.
That our marriage was essentially over.
Meanwhile, I was still living with him, making plans with him, and worrying about his health.
Two women.
Two completely different stories.
And one man standing between them.
A photographer walked by and called cheerfully, “Medal photo?”
Nobody answered.
He quickly moved on.
