I looked directly at him.
**“That wasn’t one mistake, Daniel. It was a series of choices.”**
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he said quietly:
“I do love you.”
I closed my eyes.
Those words hurt more than I expected.
Because part of me still loved him too.
I’d loved him at seven that morning when I thought he was sick.
I’d loved him the previous evening while preparing our race clothes.
I’d loved him for seven years of ordinary mornings, shared dinners, family celebrations, and quiet moments.
That love didn’t disappear instantly just because I’d discovered the truth.
But it no longer made his choices acceptable.
“Then why?” I asked.
Daniel looked down.
“I think I was afraid to tell you how unhappy I was.”
“So you told Laura instead.”
He wiped his face.
“I didn’t know how to leave.”
