I Joined A Charity Race—Then Watched My Husband Cross The Finish Line Holding Another Woman’s Hand.

One of my coworkers had registered first and encouraged me to join her.

I’d always enjoyed walking and jogging, but I’d never trained seriously for a race of that distance.

Still, I wanted to challenge myself.

I started running before work and gradually increased my distance.

When I mentioned the event to Daniel, he surprised me.

“I’ll sign up too,” he said.

I laughed.

“You hate running.”

“I hate treadmills,” he corrected. “Running outside is different.”

“You complained when we had to hurry through the airport last summer.”

“I was carrying luggage.”

“One suitcase had wheels.”

He laughed and tossed a cushion at me.

For a few minutes, we were the couple we’d once been.

Playful.

Comfortable.

Happy simply being together.

I hadn’t realized how much I’d missed those moments.

So when Daniel promised he’d run the race with me, I was genuinely excited.
