This combination of personal grief and public attention created an unusual environment in which to mourn.

Grief does not follow a predictable schedule. Some people experience intense sadness immediately, while others feel numbness, confusion, anger, or disbelief. Emotions may return unexpectedly years later, triggered by music, photographs, anniversaries, or seemingly ordinary moments.

For adolescents, bereavement can be particularly difficult because it coincides with a period of rapid emotional and social development. Young people are already learning how to regulate feelings, establish independence, and form relationships outside their families. Losing a parent during this period can make those tasks more challenging.

Public attention can complicate the process further. When millions of strangers discuss a deceased parent, a grieving child may struggle to separate private memories from public narratives.

There can also be pressure to preserve the parent’s reputation, defend their legacy, or respond to questions that the child is not emotionally prepared to answer.
