Residential treatment programs and therapeutic schools vary considerably in their practices, quality, and oversight. Some provide essential care to young people who need intensive support. Others have faced serious allegations of abuse, neglect, coercion, and harmful treatment.

Some experience physical symptoms, while others primarily notice changes in mood, sleep, concentration, or relationships.
