The idea of service offers a different measure of success from wealth, celebrity status, or professional achievement.

Public recognition is largely determined by other people’s attention. It can rise and fall according to trends, commercial decisions, news cycles, and circumstances outside an individual’s control.

Service, by contrast, is concerned with what a person contributes to others.

That contribution does not need to be dramatic. It may involve helping a friend through a difficult period, supporting a community organization, protecting an animal, volunteering time, or using professional skills to advance a cause.

For public figures, service can also involve directing attention toward organizations and issues that might otherwise receive less visibility. However, the value of such work depends on its substance, consistency, and relationship to the communities involved, rather than publicity alone.

The distinction between image and impact matters.

A person may be widely admired without contributing much to others. Another person may quietly make a meaningful difference without receiving recognition.
