My biological father turned up after fourteen years with a new car on my seventeenth birthday. Then he looked past me at my stepdad and said one sentence.

Her will was made in 2021 and it does two things.

It leaves the house on Pell Street to me, held in trust until I am twenty-one.

And it leaves her son Roland Ash eleven thousand pounds and nothing else.

He found out in the April.

He turned up in our garden in the June.

The car is on finance. A four-year agreement taken out on the fourteenth of May, in his name, and by the September he was two payments behind on it, which I know because the finance company wrote to our address by mistake since he had put my name on the customer notes.

He needed eleven months.

Eleven months of being my father, from the June until I turned eighteen, which is when a solicitor writes to a beneficiary and asks whether they would like to meet the trustees.

PART 4 — TWO HUNDRED A MONTH
