My husband gave away every maternity dress I owned while I was at work. When I asked what I was supposed to wear, he kept spreading mustard on his sandwich.

He asked whether I needed groceries.

He offered to arrange an oil change.

He wanted to repair the loose front step.

I appreciated the practical help.

But I refused to mistake individual acts of kindness for restored trust.

Meanwhile, Tara asked whether she could visit.

I agreed to thirty minutes.

She arrived without flowers, gifts, or excuses.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

Then she carefully acknowledged everything she’d done.

She admitted she’d accepted my clothes after believing Nick.

Then she’d recognized items I still needed.

She’d questioned his explanation.

But instead of stopping, she’d continued selling them.

“When you messaged me,” I said, “you already suspected I hadn’t given permission.”

She nodded.

“And you told me to talk to Nick.”

“I was hoping he’d fix it before I had to face you.”

I looked at her.

“You mean before you had to take responsibility.”
