MY SON DIED SAVING HIS 5-YEAR-OLD SISTER WITH A TRANSPLANT. ON HER 18TH BIRTHDAY

On her eighteenth birthday, Hannah opened a card with a photo of herself from three days earlier, signed: “Happy birthday, little sister. I promised I’d be here.”

“Is this a joke?” she wept. “Luke was my only brother.”

Then the doorbell rang. On my porch stood a stranger, holding his hat.

“My name is Peter. Eighteen years ago, your son saved my life. Before his surgery, he asked the coordinator to pass on a message if anything happened to him. He made me promise I’d be at his little sister’s eighteenth birthday.

I’ve carried his heart for eighteen years, ma’am. And I came to keep his promise.”

Chapter 2: The Promise Luke Made

I stood in my doorway holding the frame, and eighteen years of grief rearranged itself into something I had no word for.

Peter came in, gently, and sat with me at my kitchen table while Hannah’s friends kept her in the other room, and he told me everything, and I understood that my son had done something in the days before his surgery that I never knew about.
