My Widowed Mother-in-Law Stayed Behind With a Man She Met on Vacation—Six Nights Later, She Called Me Whispering, “I Need You to Get Me Out Before Morning”

“That makes people do stupid things.”

I looked toward the beach where Diane and Malcolm were walking barefoot through the shallow water.

“Loneliness can also make people stop doing anything at all.”

Ethan said nothing.

Our vacation was scheduled to end on Sunday.

Saturday evening, Diane asked us to meet her on the balcony.

She already had a glass of wine when we arrived.

That should have warned me.

“I changed my flight.”

Ethan blinked.

“What?”

“I’m staying another week.”

“With Malcolm?”

“Yes.”

The air shifted immediately.

Malcolm had rented a small house about fifteen minutes away and planned to remain on the island for another two weeks.

He had invited Diane to stay in the guest room.

At least, that was how Diane described it.

Ethan looked at her like she had announced she was joining a motorcycle gang.

“You’re staying in a house with a man you met five days ago?”
