If one side consistently causes shoulder, hip, or neck pain, try changing positions or improving your pillow support.
3. Sleeping on Your Stomach
Stomach sleeping is one of the positions that deserves more attention.
Some people naturally prefer sleeping on their stomach. However, because your head usually has to remain turned to one side for an extended period, this position can place stress on the neck and spine.
It may also increase pressure on the shoulders, chest, hips, or lower back depending on the mattress and body position.
Is stomach sleeping always dangerous?
No.
For a healthy adult, sleeping on the stomach does not automatically mean something dangerous will happen.
However, if you frequently wake up with:
- Neck stiffness
- Shoulder pain
- Lower-back discomfort
- Numbness or tingling
your sleeping position may be worth reconsidering.
4. The Curled-Up Fetal Position
The fetal position—sleeping curled up on your side—is extremely common.
It can feel comfortable and may help people feel secure while falling asleep.
