“That’s all?”
“Sometimes five.”
Diane looked at him.
“That doesn’t sound like much.”
Marcus smiled.
“It was never about the amount.”
The Bigger Surprise
Diane thought she had finally discovered Caleb’s secret.
But then Marcus found something else.
At the bottom of one box was a folder labeled:
PROJECT HOME
He opened it.
Inside were architectural sketches.
A small building.
A kitchen.
Several bedrooms.
A common room.
A fenced yard.
Diane looked confused.
“What is this?”
Marcus stared at the drawings.
“I’ve never seen these.”
Then he found a note.
It was dated six weeks before Caleb died.
A place where nobody has to sleep outside.
A place where people can bring their dogs.
A place where someone can stay long enough to get back on their feet.
Diane’s heart sank.
Caleb had been planning a shelter.
Not a massive organization.
Not something glamorous.
A small home for people who had nowhere else to go.
