Marcus looked down.
“He was driving to see you.”
Diane froze.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Marcus pointed to another envelope.
Inside was a parking receipt.
It showed a location only a few miles from Diane’s house.
The date was the day Caleb died.
He had been on his way home.
Diane closed her eyes.
For three years, she had believed Caleb had died while traveling for work.
That was what she had been told.
Now she knew he had been coming to see her.
He had been coming home.
The Final Message
At the bottom of the box was Caleb’s phone.
The screen no longer worked.
Marcus had kept it because he couldn’t bring himself to throw it away.
Diane looked at it.
“Can we recover anything?”
Marcus wasn’t sure.
But later that evening, they took it to a technician.
After several attempts, some data was recovered.
There were old photographs.
