The three of them were standing outside the old storage unit.
Caleb was laughing.
Marcus looked younger.
Buddy looked proud.
Underneath the photograph, Diane placed a small wooden sign.
It said:
“You matter more than you know.”
That had become the home’s unofficial motto.
No one remembered exactly when Caleb first said it.
But everyone believed he had.
The Last Surprise
One spring morning, Diane was cleaning the old storage room when she found a final envelope.
She recognized the handwriting immediately.
Mom.
Her hands shook.
She opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
It showed Diane herself.
She was standing outside her house.
She had no memory of the photograph being taken.
On the back was written:
“Mom, you don’t know it yet, but one day you’ll understand.”
