That doesn’t erase the consequences of a serious crime.
But it does raise the possibility that education, therapy, mentorship, treatment, and maturity could change the person’s behavior.
The difficult part is determining whether rehabilitation has genuinely occurred.
That requires evidence.
It cannot be established simply because someone says they’re sorry, nor can it be ruled out solely because someone committed a terrible act as a teenager.
Justice Is More Complicated Than a Number
Fifty-eight years sounds definitive.
But justice cannot always be reduced to a number.
A sentence affects victims.
It affects defendants.
It affects families.
It affects taxpayers and correctional systems.
And it reflects society’s beliefs about punishment and rehabilitation.
That is why sentencing debates can become so emotional.
People aren’t merely arguing about arithmetic.
They’re arguing about what they believe justice should accomplish.
