The Role of the Clutch
A crawler gear can also reduce the temptation to rely heavily on clutch slipping during difficult maneuvers.
Clutch slipping can generate substantial heat.
Repeatedly holding the vehicle at a very low speed by partially engaging the clutch can accelerate clutch wear.
A suitably low gear can allow the driver to maintain slow movement while keeping the clutch more fully engaged.
That can be especially useful when the vehicle is working under heavy load.
However, using a low gear does not mean the clutch can never be used.
The driver still needs to operate it appropriately during starting, shifting, and other maneuvers.
The main advantage is that the extremely low gearing makes slow-speed operation mechanically easier.
When Would You Actually Use a G Gear?
If your vehicle is equipped with a genuine crawler or terrain gear marked G, it is generally intended for situations where extremely low speed and strong wheel torque are needed.
