She stood up.
Her injured arm protested immediately, but she ignored it.
“You can’t just walk into my life and tell me everything I know is wrong.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
Her voice grew stronger.
“You don’t know what it feels like to spend your whole life wondering why nobody stayed.”
Vincent’s expression changed.
A small crack appeared in his calm.
“You’re right.”
The answer surprised her.
“I don’t know what that feels like.”
He paused.
“But I know what it feels like to spend your life believing someone you loved was gone.”
The sadness in his voice stopped her.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Lena looked back at the photograph.
The woman holding the baby.
The woman with her eyes.
“Where is she?”
