The Morning After My Wedding, I Found a Polaroid of My Husband With a Woman I’d Never Seen. On the Back, She Had Written, “She Still Can’t Know I’m Back.”

He took a breath.

“Your mother’s film archive.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Home movies.”

“Audio tapes.”

“Photographs.”

“Letters.”

“A journal.”

My knees went weak.

I sat down.

“My mother didn’t have—”

“She did.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“She did.”

“How would Evelyn have them?”

“That is part of what she needs to explain.”

I looked at the storage receipt.

“Locker 417.”

“Yes.”

“The two cases.”

“Yes.”

“Those are my mother’s things?”

“Most of them.”

My mouth went dry.

“Most?”

Adrian sat across from me.

“There’s also a wooden keepsake chest your grandfather made.”

The box in the Polaroid.

Memory snapped into place.

I had seen it.

Years ago.

Not in person.

In a photograph.

My mother sitting on the floor as a teenager beside a dark wooden box with brass corners.

I whispered:

“I thought that was lost.”

“So did everyone.”

I looked up.

“How long have you known?”
