The Morning After My Wedding, I Found a Polaroid of My Husband With a Woman I’d Never Seen. On the Back, She Had Written, “She Still Can’t Know I’m Back.”

“Good.”

“Then she can explain herself.”

He stood.

“You shouldn’t hear this alone.”

I laughed.

“I’ve apparently been alone in this information for eleven months.”

Then I walked into the bathroom.

Changed clothes.

Packed my passport into my handbag.

Our honeymoon suitcase stayed by the door.

Adrian waited outside the bathroom.

When I came out, he said:

“If you go alone, I’ll respect it.”

“Thank you.”

“But Claire?”

I stopped.

“I never cheated.”

“I know.”

He looked surprised.

“This stopped feeling like cheating ten minutes ago.”

“That doesn’t mean it stopped feeling like betrayal.”

Then I left.

Bellmere Heritage Storage looked nothing like the mysterious place my imagination had created.

No dark warehouse.

No secret vault.

Just a renovated brick building beside an old railway spur.

I arrived twenty minutes early.

The receptionist asked my name.

Then looked startled.

“Oh.”

That did not help.

“I’m here for locker 417.”
