“I searched Adrian.”
“That’s unsettling.”
“Yes.”
She almost smiled.
“I deserved that.”
“I contacted him because I wanted to return everything before your wedding.”
“Why him?”
“Because I was afraid you wouldn’t answer me.”
“You were right.”
“I know.”
“So Adrian agreed to become your secret courier.”
“Not immediately.”
Apparently Adrian had been suspicious.
Good.
At least one person was.
He insisted Evelyn prove who she was.
She sent childhood photographs.
Copies of letters from my mother.
Documents.
Then Adrian flew to meet her.
My stomach tightened.
“When?”
“Last November.”
He had told me the trip was for work.
Another lie.
“He saw everything?”
“Not everything.”
“Enough to believe me.”
“Why didn’t you just ship it?”
“Because some of the film reels needed restoration.”
“Several tapes had deteriorated.”
“The chest had water damage.”
“Adrian wanted it preserved correctly before giving it to you.”
I looked at the storage room.
