Margaret scoffed.
“What agreement?”
Before I could answer, the doorbell rang.
A process server stood outside carrying two envelopes.
One addressed to Charles.
The other to Daniel.
Daniel ripped his open.
His confident expression shifted to confusion.
Then concern.
“What is this?”
“A formal notice requiring relevant company records to be preserved,” I explained.
“For what?”
“An independent investigation into potential financial misconduct.”
Charles dropped his envelope onto the table.
For six months, my firm’s auditors had been examining discrepancies within Harrington Industrial.
There were questionable vendor payments.
Unexplained transfers.
And expenses that appeared unrelated to legitimate company operations.
The findings were serious enough to require further investigation.
Daniel glared at me.
“You’ve been spying on my family?”
“No. The company agreed to independent financial oversight when it accepted the funding.”
Margaret stopped speaking.
Then I looked directly at my husband.
“And there’s another matter.”
He swallowed.
