“Rooms that are too quiet,” he said.
Denise did not ask why.
That was the right choice.
“Thank you for telling me.”
Ethan nodded.
Question four was about favorite books.
Question five was about school.
Question six was whether Denise wanted other children.
She said she and Jonathan had not decided.
Question seven was about Lily.
Jonathan answered that one.
“She likes soccer, mystery novels, and drawing faces on fruit.”
Ethan frowned.
“Why?”
“I’ve learned not to ask.”
“Is she nice?”
“Usually.”
“Does she know about me?”
“Yes.”
“What did you tell her?”
Jonathan’s expression became serious.
“That Denise has a son who was raised by his aunt, and that you’re important to her even though the relationship is complicated.”
Ethan nodded approvingly.
“That is sufficiently accurate.”
“What was question eight?” Denise asked.
Ethan took another bite of ice cream.
“I decided not to ask it yet.”
