The second letter Ethan kept for four years revealed why Denise returned only on his graduation day

We had not become a better family because one dramatic truth appeared at a graduation.

We became better slowly.

By answering calls.

Showing up.

Giving choices back.

Saying what was difficult while there was still time to say it.

Letting apologies remain imperfect.

Letting forgiveness remain unfinished.

Letting love become something practiced rather than claimed.

Ethan stood.

“I’m hungry.”

“You ate half a graduation cake.”

“That was several hours ago.”

“It was ninety minutes.”

“Time is relative.”

“Not that relative.”

He opened the back door.

“Denise texted.”

I looked up.

“What does she want?”

“She wants to know if we’re coming Sunday.”

“For dinner?”

“Yes.”

“You want to?”

He shrugged.

“Lily will be there.”

I smiled.

“So yes.”

“Yes.”

“Then tell her yes.”

He typed.

A second later his phone buzzed.

“What did she say?”

He showed me.

Great. And tell Joanna I’m making lasagna. No cooked tomatoes for you. I remembered.
