The Wallet, the Pink Notice, and the Family Secret That Had Waited Twelve Years12

“My mom’s handling it,” Ruby said quickly.

Nathaniel was silent.

Then he crouched slightly so he was no longer towering over her.

“I believe you,” he said. “But there is something printed on that notice that I recognize.”

Ruby frowned.

“You read it from way over there?”

“Not all of it. Only the property company.”

Ruby slowly pulled out the pink page.

Across the top, beneath the words FINAL NOTICE, was a company name.

Aldridge Residential Holdings.

Nathaniel stared at it.

His jaw tightened.

“Where do you live?”

Ruby hesitated.

Her mother’s rules immediately came to mind.

Never tell strangers where you live.

Even if the stranger wore an expensive suit.

Even if everyone in the building knew his name.

Nathaniel appeared to understand.

“You don’t have to give me the address,” he said quickly. “Your mother taught you correctly.”

Ruby liked him a little better for saying that.
