The Wallet, the Pink Notice, and the Family Secret That Had Waited Twelve Years12

“You never mentioned that?”

“I forgot.”

Mrs. Alvarez, who had appeared because nobody in 114 Aldridge conducted interesting business without her eventually learning about it, rolled her eyes.

“You remember baseball scores from 1974 but not useful information.”

Nathaniel pressed the wooden strip.

A narrow compartment released with a soft click.

Everyone stopped.

Inside lay a single folded document.

Claire took it out.

The paper had yellowed at the edges.

At the top were the words:

DOCUMENT CONTROL — EXECUTIVE OFFICE

Below that was a chain of names, dates, and signatures.

Nathaniel scanned it.

His finger stopped at one line.

Claire leaned closer.

The file had left Nathaniel’s office twelve years earlier after receiving his signature.

It had gone to corporate finance.

The recipient had signed his name.

Malcolm Voss.

But there was another entry below it.

Three days later, Voss had transferred the file somewhere else.

Not to legal.

Not to real estate.
