The Wallet, the Pink Notice, and the Family Secret That Had Waited Twelve Years12

He continued.

“The Aldridge properties were managed by another company. Later, they were sold.”

“To Aldridge Residential Holdings?”

“No.”

That seemed important.

Nathaniel glanced at the notice again.

“That company wasn’t supposed to exist.”

Before Ruby could ask what that meant, Margaret returned.

“Her mother is on her way.”

Ruby sat straighter.

“Is she mad?”

Margaret’s expression softened.

“Mostly worried.”

“That’s worse.”

Margaret almost laughed.

“Probably.”

Nathaniel stood.

“Margaret, get Daniel Cho from legal. And find everything we still have concerning the Aldridge Street properties from twelve to thirteen years ago.”

Margaret hesitated.

“Everything?”

“Especially the Bennett file.”

Ruby’s head snapped toward him.

“There is a file with our name on it?”

Nathaniel went very still.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked down at her.

“I think that is something your mother should explain with us.”

Ruby suddenly lost interest in the rest of her sandwich.

Twenty-six minutes later, the glass entrance doors opened and Claire Bennett hurried into Graves Tower.
