Then he answered.
“I’ll be home at five.”
He arrived at 4:47.
I’d spread the receipts and transaction records across the dining table.
Tony looked at them and stopped.
“Jennifer…”
“Please explain.”
He pulled out a chair.
“I’m helping a family.”
“With children’s medical bills?”
“They’ve been going through a difficult time.”
“And the consulting payments?”
He looked away.
“I didn’t want you asking questions.”
I stared at him.
“So you decided to hide them?”
He sighed.
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
“You could have told me the truth.”
He leaned forward.
“Nothing is happening between Dakota and me.”
I looked at him carefully.
“I didn’t ask about Dakota.”
His face changed.
And suddenly, I understood that the two things might be connected.
“Is Dakota involved with the child whose medical bills you’ve been paying?”
“Jennifer, you’re misunderstanding.”
“Then explain it.”
