Tony took my hand.
“You’ll have that, Jen.”
“You really think so?”
He smiled.
“I’ll make sure of it.”
I believed him.
We married when I was twenty.
Eight years later, we had a beautiful house, stable jobs, and what I believed was a happy marriage.
There was only one thing missing.
Children.
At first, Tony said he wanted us to settle into married life.
“Maybe next year,” he’d tell me.
Then he wanted to focus on earning a promotion.
After that, he wanted us to finish renovating the house.
Every time I brought up having a baby, there was another reason to wait.
I tried to be patient.
Tony insisted he wanted to give our future children the best possible life.
“I don’t want us struggling financially, Jennifer. When we become parents, I want us to be ready.”
One evening, I finally asked him:
“We have a house, good jobs, and savings. What else do we need?”
