At my in-laws’ 50th anniversary, my mother-in-law announced that my husband would inherit nothing from their $5 million estate because “Mark doesn’t need it.” Ten minutes later

“Neither.”

I poured coffee and walked behind him.

A job listing filled his screen.

Regional director, Mountain Region.

Denver, Colorado.

I stopped.

Mark’s company had offered him that job before.

More than once.

“I thought you already told them no.”

“I did.”

“How many times?”

He kept looking at the screen.

“Three.”

I pulled out the chair across from him. “Then why are you looking at it now?”

For the first time since Patricia’s announcement, he wrapped both hands around his mug and looked directly at me.

“Because the reason I kept saying no was sitting at that table last night.”

I sat quietly.

Twenty-one years of marriage teaches you that sometimes the best contribution to a conversation is saying nothing until the other person becomes uncomfortable enough to continue.

Mark lasted about fifteen seconds.

“Before you say anything, I haven’t called Tom.”

“Good.”

His eyebrows rose. “That was quick.”
