By the time my husband graduated from medical school I had spent eight years paying for it. On the lawn afterward his mother took the flowers out of my hands, he pushed an envelope into them, and I opened it standing in front of eighty people.

Gratitude is a very effective way of making a transaction sound like a virtue. If somebody is thanking you for a sacrifice, everybody at that table hears a woman being honoured, and nobody hears a woman being invoiced.

Not one of them ever asked when it would end.

That is the tell and I did not see it for eight years. In eight years, at maybe forty family occasions, not one person in that family ever asked me what my plan was.

They asked about Teo’s rotations. They asked about the match. They asked, in the sixth year, whether we were thinking about children, which I could not have afforded and which I had to be pleasant about.

Nobody asked whether I was going back to school, because everybody in that room had already privately answered it, and I did not find out that they had until a woman in a lilac suit said it out loud on a lawn.
