“What?”
“My birthday. You told me you had a client lunch before we went to dinner.”
His expression changed.
I knew before he answered.
“Yes,” he admitted.
I felt my throat tighten.
“You had lunch with her and then came home to celebrate with me?”
He nodded.
I thought about that evening.
Daniel had brought me flowers.
He’d kissed me across the restaurant table.
He’d told me I looked beautiful.
All while another woman already occupied part of his life.
Then Daniel said something even worse.
“She knew it was your birthday.”
I stared at him.
“She knew?”
He nodded reluctantly.
I closed my eyes.
Laura knew my name.
She knew details about my life.
But she knew them through the version of our marriage Daniel had invented.
Meanwhile, I hadn’t even known she existed.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Claire, I’m sorry.”
I looked at him.
“What are you sorry for?”
