I Joined A Charity Race—Then Watched My Husband Cross The Finish Line Holding Another Woman’s Hand.

“For everything.”

“Everything?”

He nodded.

“For lying to me?”

“Yes.”

“For lying to Laura?”

“Yes.”

“For pretending to be sick so you could run with her?”

He lowered his head.

“Yes.”

I took a breath.

“And for spending this morning holding her hand while I thought you were in bed?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“The hand-holding wasn’t what you’re thinking. We’d agreed to cross the finish line together.”

I stared at him.

Of all the things he could have said, he was still trying to defend one small detail.

“You really don’t understand, do you?”

He looked confused.

“I know you’re upset.”

“No, Daniel. You understand that I’m angry. You still don’t understand what you’ve done.”

A voice behind us interrupted.

“Neither do I.”

We both turned.

Laura stood a few feet away.

Her eyes were red.

And she was holding a small drawstring bag with Daniel’s name attached.
