He looked at me.
“I’ll answer anything you want to know.”
I considered that.
Earlier, I’d wanted every detail.
Every lunch.
Every message.
Every lie.
But now I understood that knowing every detail wouldn’t change the central truth.
“You lied to both of us,” I said.
“Yes.”
“You told Laura we were separated.”
“Yes.”
“You continued coming home to me.”
He nodded.
“And you probably would have continued living both lives if I hadn’t seen you today.”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he whispered:
“Probably.”
The answer hurt.
But at least it was honest.
Finally.
I took a breath.
“That’s enough for tonight.”
He stared at me.
“Do you hate me?”
I thought carefully.
“No.”
He looked surprised.
“Why not?”
I lowered my eyes.
“Because I loved you this morning.”
Daniel’s face crumpled.
“At seven o’clock, I loved you, and I thought you were sick.”
