My husband gave away every maternity dress I owned while I was at work. When I asked what I was supposed to wear, he kept spreading mustard on his sandwich.

There it was again.

He was counting the material things while ignoring the emotional damage.

“Nick, when I asked you to get my clothes back, you refused.”

“I know.”

“You watched television while I cried upstairs.”

He didn’t answer.

“You knew how much those clothes meant to me. And instead of helping, you told me I was overreacting.”

Silence.

“Think about that before you ask why I’m still hurt.”

The following week, he attended another counseling appointment.

He apologized for the conversation.

For a moment, I allowed myself to hope he was beginning to understand.

Then my maternity photographer called.

Her name was Marcia Holt, and we had scheduled my photo session for October 24.

“Anna, I’m confirming Saturday’s appointment,” she said. “But there’s something I need to ask.”

“What is it?”

“Your husband contacted me about canceling the session. He said you’ve been under stress and might prefer a refund.”
